According to the 2000 District inventory of municipal solid waste management activities, some of form of recycling is taking place in at least 77 cities. Curbside collection of recyclable materials (paper, glass, aluminum cans) is available in 73 cities in the District. The City of St. Louis has both a curbside collection program and drop-off recycling sites. In three cities, drop-off centers are the only recycling opportunity for residents.
In the City of St. Louis, curbside collection is an optional program available through a private contractor. The City is conducting a cost-sharing program in a few zip codes and is exploring offering this service citywide. The City of St. Louis also operated 24 drop-off centers. St. Louis County has an ordinance requiring haulers operating in unincorporated areas to offer curbside collection of recyclables to their customers.
